One of my favorite memories as a child is going camping. Sometimes on the weekends around Spring and also during Summer, my family and I would go to a local campground in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, and stay for a couple of days or more.
We packed a cooler full of food and stayed in tents at the Fort Pickens Campground. Every day we would start out early going to the beach, or hiking a trail, then my sister and I loved riding our bikes, or walking around the campground.
It may sound odd, but I enjoyed seeing all kinds of different campsites, the smell of sunscreen in the air, hotdogs on the grill, and varieties of radios playing different stations as we passed by each site.
I loved everything about camping, even sleeping in a tent on the ground. It doesn't sound like much, but those were some of the happiest moments of my childhood.
I know those true campers will say that staying at a campground like this isn't true camping, but for me it was perfect! You get the best of both worlds. You get to sleep outside and take hot showers in a bathroom. We may not have "roughed it" as "true" campers would say, but it was a slice of heaven for me!
I loved waking up to the smell of coffee brewing outside the tent in my mom's kettle, and I absolutely loved the smell of the charcoal grill when we cooked hotdogs and hamburgers. It was during these times I felt so relaxed about life and I felt at peace with the world. The days seemed to creep by ever so slowly, and the evenings were just as nice.
At night, I loved, loved, loved the magical symphony of the frogs and crickets! I am still in love with the songs the frogs and crickets make at night! It was one of the most soothing sounds to me and one that I would regularly fall asleep to. What pure bliss it was to be serenaded to sleep by the sounds of nature.
Sometimes the best things in life are simple.
